A Step-by-Step Guide to Being LGBT+ Friendly

  1. Listen –

Listen carefully when a person belonging to the LGBT+ community tells you about their sexual and social recognition, hear out the pronouns they go by, and their gender. However, if they aren’t comfortable with sharing something, do not pressurize them into talking about it.

  1. Don’t Assume –

Do not make assumptions about a person based on external judgments. Use gender-neutral terms and pronouns. Also, do NOT, at any cost, use disparaging terms to describe a person belonging to ANY community.

  1. Accept their individuality –

Coming out is never easy and if someone decides to come out to you, feel truly grateful because they trust you. Do not divulge their sexual identity at any cost, NOT without talking it through. STAY DISCREET! Do not make demeaning comments or argue why they haven’t come out earlier. Give them their personal space, and support them when needed. Ensure that they don’t feel guilty or incompatible.

  1. Stand with them –

Understand that the LGBT+ community doesn’t receive enough support and privileges from the government and the people around them. Remember there are various contradictions and violence against the LGBT+ community. Voice your concerns about the rights of the community, participate in rallies, and etcetera. Utilize social media platforms to start a change.

  1. Fight to challenge the hatred –

Unfortunately, not everyone accepts the members of the LGBT+ community. If you come across a person who tends to use inappropriate and demeaning language towards the members of the LGBT+ community, inform them that it’s NOT as captivating as it looks. Educate them about the importance of being an ally and make SURE to ask him/her to put herself/himself in their shoes to make the situation a bit more perceptive.

Finally, remember, love is love and no one deserves to be discriminated against for being themselves!
